What is a foam roof?

A foam roof is 1–1.5 inches of closed-cell spray polyurethane foam, sprayed as a liquid that expands and hardens into one seamless slab, under a thin elastomeric or silicone coating that takes the sun. It is a roof and the insulation in one layer.

The layers, top down

  1. Top coat — acrylic elastomeric or silicone, 20–30 dry mils, white. Blocks UV, sheds water, reflects heat. Renewed every 5–7 years. The only part that wears out.
  2. Foam — 2.5–3 lb density closed-cell polyurethane, R-6.5–7 per inch. Bonds to the substrate, adds slope where sprayed thicker, self-flashes around every penetration.
  3. Substrate — plywood deck, old built-up roof, modified bitumen, metal or concrete. Foam goes over almost all of them without a tear-off.

Foam roof vs foam insulation

Different products. Roofing foam is dense, closed-cell, sprayed outdoors and coated. Spray foam insulation is sprayed inside walls and attics and is never a roof surface. If you searched "spray foam roofing" and meant attic insulation, you want an insulation contractor.

How it fails, and how it's fixed

The coating chalks and thins; birds peck; blisters form over trapped moisture; scuppers clog and water ponds. All of it is coating-level and repairable. Repair → · Recoat → · Lifespan →

Where it's used

Questions people ask

Is a foam roof waterproof?

Yes — the foam is closed-cell and seamless, and the coating sheds water. Leaks come from coating failures (pinholes, splits) rather than the foam itself.

Can you walk on a foam roof?

Yes, carefully. Use walk pads at HVAC units and avoid sharp heels; foot traffic is a common cause of coating damage.

How is a foam roof installed?

The surface is cleaned and dried, foam is sprayed in lifts to the specified thickness, slope is built up toward drains, and the coating is applied in two passes once the foam cures — typically one to three days for a home.
