Choosing a foam roofing contractor in Phoenix

Phoenix has a dozen foam specialists and a hundred roofers who'll “do foam too.” The difference shows up in year six. Here is how to tell them apart in one phone call — and who answers ours.

YOUR AVERAGE FOAM ROOF — foam for insulation and slope, a thin top coat for the sun. The coat (peeled back here) is the part that wears out, and the part that is cheap to renew.

Four checks before you book

  1. ROC licence, class CR-42 (or C-42 commercial). Spray foam, elastomeric and silicone coatings are named in the CR-42 scope. Look it up at azroc.gov — status, bond, complaints. Walkthrough →
  2. The $1,000 rule. Arizona's handyman exemption covers jobs under $1,000 total and never permit work. Every recoat and install is over it. An unlicensed "coating guy" leaves you with no bond and no recourse.
  3. Product and mils on the quote. Brand, acrylic or silicone, dry mil thickness, foam thickness and density on new installs. "Recoat roof — $5,500" is not a quote.
  4. Foam-specific track record. Ask for three foam roofs they coated more than five years ago that you can drive past. Generalists can't answer that.

Questions that separate specialists from generalists

Ask

  • What density foam and what thickness?
  • Acrylic or silicone, and why on my roof?
  • How do you handle ponding — tapered foam or coating?
  • What's on the roof now, and does it need primer?
  • Who does the storm inspection after monsoon?

Walk away if

  • No ROC number on the truck, card or quote
  • Price per "coat" instead of per mil
  • Wants to coat today after yesterday's storm
  • Says foam roofs "don't need recoating"
  • Cash-only discount with no paperwork

Questions people ask

Do foam roofers need a licence in Arizona?

Yes. Spray polyurethane foam and liquid-applied coatings fall under the ROC CR-42 roofing classification; contracting without a licence over $1,000 is a Class 1 misdemeanour. Verify at azroc.gov.

How many foam roofing companies are in Phoenix?

About a dozen foam specialists plus general roofers that offer it. The specialists are mostly family shops in Mesa, north Phoenix and Scottsdale, several in business since the 1970s–90s.

Is this site a roofing company?

No. AZ Foam Roof is an independent referral site; calls and quote requests go to one licensed contractor whose ROC number we publish. We don't take a cut of your job price.
